Independence Day Fireworks... Yikes!

As Independence Day weekend approaches, I thought I would send out this quick reminder to all: Animals are inherently terrified of ultra-loud, explosive blasts of sound such as those of fireworks. In our neighborhood we seem to see more "Lost Dog" and "Lost Cat" signs in and around our parks just after the 4th of July holiday. It's not a stretch to suspect that having been subjected to the sound of fireworks, these pets darted off in sheer terror. Cesar Milan has some wonderful tips for protecting your pet during this holiday. While I can't imagine any reason why your pet should be anywhere but indoors, Mr. Milan does offer some advice to those whose pets seemingly have no choice but to be caught in the crossfire.

If you love your pets as I know you do, please don't bring them to Independence Day events thinking that a splendid time will be guaranteed for all. Between the crowds and the sounds, it won't be so splendid for them. Be kind to your pets by bringing them indoors to the safety and peace of their own home. They will thank you, and you will thank yourself!

i read these tips after the fact but put myself in cesar mode to help get our basset/beagle through the 4th of july. she is terrified of loud noises so it's always a struggle to get through the 4th.

Oh my gosh this poor little doggie found our crowd of fireworks watchers at the top of a hill and he had only one eye and was absolutely terrified!!

But the funny thing was that the friends we were watching fireworks with had this giant beast of a dog that LOVED the fireworks in fact i think he thought he was protecting US from them! ??

Oh my dogs are terrified of fireworks...they start scratching on the front window to be let into the house.
Love the blog....found my way over here from Andi :)

Thanks for your comment, Krissa... and I'm not surprised about your dogs scratching on the window to get in. Poor babies :( Thank goodness they're fortunate enough to have their lives house-cave to hide in :)

Thanks for replying, Carissa. Awww... poor little doggie, but that's NUTS about the big doggie! The big one must have been part human... hehe... but he's in no way related to me. I can't stand the sound of fireworks either unless I'm miiiiiiiiiiiiles away. Heehee.

Thanks for replying! Yup -- good, ol' Cesar to the rescue. Now I'm waiting for Fleet Week and the Blue Angels. The works are usually pretty far away so the sound's not too bad, but we're in Pac. Hts. and the Blue Angels fly right past our window and over our building. Very cool to see; not so cool to hear... for ANY of us!

Thanks again,
Debbie
